Consulting Club Kick Off

Welcome to the Consulting Club for an exciting year where you can develop your talent for consulting, market your talent with leading consulting firms, and connect yourself with the consulting world.

Pursuing this target, we have kicked off the first consulting club meeting on March 7 to outline these objectives and obtain a list of ideas and expectations. To further ensure that this target is met, the club is structured on 3 pillars – Collaboration & Knowledge Management, Skills Development, and Events Management, with Tarun Choudhary, Sandeep Pal, and Fletcher Trowse leading each of these respective pillars. With many years of practical consulting experience, Daniel Mollerhenn, leads the club, as our president, and ensures we are all aligned and march towards meeting our primary goals..

Interview Skills with Annette Senogles

Annette Senogles is a registered psychologist with a broad range of professional skills supported by 20 years experience managing human resources, in consulting and corporate roles, in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region.  Since 2000, Annette has been self-employed, providing a comprehensive range of management services to client organisations in various industries, including education, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, biotech, retail, aged care and hospitality.

Annette has been providing interviewing skills coaching sessions to AGSM MBA students for the past 8 years. These sessions complement programs provided by the Career Services team, and are based on a behavioural competency framework which enables students to demonstrate the relevance of their past work experiences to their post-MBA career aspirations.

On March 22, Anette provided us with an overview of case interviews and employer expectations.  These will be followed by 1×1 case interview practice sessions with her in session 2.
.

Mock Interview Training with Francoise Michel

On March 29, there was a Case Study Skills Seminar by Francoise Michael. Francoise has worked formerly as a consultant with Bain & Co and a solicitor with Baker & McKinsey. With 10 years of experience working with larger firms, she set up her own recruiting and consulting company specializing in management consulting. She was here at AGSM to help us enhance our skills and confidence and provide insights on how consultants recruit from both sides of the table. After her presentation, to give everyone a feel for consulting case interviews, she also did a mock interview with our in house consultant Daniel Mollerhenn.

Case Preparation in teams

In these events, all the consulting club case group members got together in a group shindig. Led by Daniel, this session was to share all our consulting case preparation experiences. Daniel spoke about his consulting team structure, method and timeline. Then, he spoke about the framework developed to solve the cases and how it can be used to effectively to ‘crack a case.’ Finally, the session was concluded with solving a case by the group. Club members found the insights very valuable to enhance the effectiveness of their case preparation. Thereafter, the group members were asked to form their own small groups of four, which would meet regularly to practice the cases.

.

Consulting “Who is Who’

The Consulting Club will host a session to help outline the consulting landscape.  Led by on of our alumni, this session will aim to answer some of our burning questions such as: Who are the players? What are their expertise?  Which industries do they specialize in?  What is their culture? How many alumni are out there?

This session should also help you sort out career options and prepare for the upcoming information sessions.

.

‘Nail the Case’ at Bain & Co.

We will hold a case study workshop with Bain & Co.  Here we will be introduced to the “Bain Case Interview Technique”.  Led by a Bain consultant, this session would be an excellent opportunity for us to understand the consulting firm’s perspective of case interviews.  After the session there will be an opportunity to clarify doubts in a networking session with drinks and nibbles.

.

BCG Case Competition

This case competition will give you the chance to solve a real-life case in small teams with your classmates. Your team will be challenged to find recommendations to solve a business issue your “client” faces.  Teams then present their findings before a panel of judges at BCG’s Sydney Office (Chifley Tower).  While you are working on the case, BCG Consultants will provide plenty of assistance and practical tips, and of course, the best team will win a prize!

After the winner(s) are announced, there will be ample opportunity to chat over drinks with BCG Consulting Staff – some of them AGSM Alumni.

This will be a great learning opportunity - even if you are not looking for a career in consulting, it will give you valuable practice in applying your MBA skills in a real-world environment … and it will be a fun and exciting afternoon!

.

Stay tuned for more events as they get finalized in the Consulting Club.
